stepping out

B took her first steps today! I stood her a couple feet in front of me, and held out my hands and she took 3 wobbly steps into my arms. We clapped and cheered and she did it again :) Growing up so fast...

My children are on a campaign to send me into a nervous break down. Neither one of them is sleeping much at night right now, and I am so strung out. They won't ever both be awake at the same time, so I'll get B back to sleep after being up for two hours, then 20 minutes later, after having just fallen back to sleep, R will try to get in bed with us. Refuse to leave. Then throw a huge screaming tantrum at 5:30 in the morning because for whatever reason he doesn't want to sleep in his bed. Once he's settled back down, B wants to nurse again, then finally I doze off for a few more minutes until J's alarm clock goes off. So I'm awake until he leave around 6:45, because he's turning on lights, banging around. I have weird, vivid, restless dreams until 7:30, when R comes bounding back in, waking up B and I, demanding a movie and waffles. That was our night last night. I don't know why I got stuck with the sleepless kids. Karma maybe? Bad luck? I guess it's just part of having small kids. I have heard that some kids sleep, but I don't believe it. B is a good napper, and did sleep pretty well at night up until she hit 7 months. R was even doing really well until about two weeks ago, when he decided to stop sleeping through the night too. About once a week, they will both sleep reasonably well. In addition to them not sleeping, I've started waking up half way through the night with this awful pain in my lower back, and can't seem to get comfortable after that. I toss and turn, trying to find a position I can sleep in without the pain keeping me awake. I tried turning our mattress, that didn't help. I *nee* sleep. Good, restful sleep. I am feeling a little desperate this morning.

Preschool Notes- Week of 2/9

We've been keeping up with our preschool work, R is continuing to show progress with letter recognition, differentiating between letters and numbers, and honing his fine motor skills with writing and drawing. Last week he finally began recognizing purple and orange. At least I don't have to worry anymore about him being color blind. So what have we done lately?

-color pages and hand writing sheets for letter C and D.
-Finger painting. This has proven to be a really huge hit, and we work on making drawings with our fingers instead of a brush. He started making faces in the paint one day this week, then yesterday he was drawing the same faces with his markers. We also practice mixing the colors and making new colors, and splatting around making different textures in the paint.
-We did a craft activity that entailed writing letters and shapes with glue on a big sheet of butcher paper, then using dried goods from the pantry to fill in the letters. I had dried black beans, lentils, flax seeds, rice, and rolled oats. This was a whole lot of fun. We'll probably do this again as we continue to work through the alphabet.
-He is reliably recognizing B, O, K, A, C, X
-He saw the word BOOK, and read the letters off to me.

He is showing interest in clocks, time, and days of the week, so I am thinking about getting one of those magnetic or dry erase calendars to help him learn. I also want to have him do a collage project sometime soon.

Sneak Peek

Here's a sneak peek at some of my spring knits!

I've never really done a spring and summer line of wearables. Last year I was on maternity/moving leave. The year before that, I made several purses, which didn't sell well. So this year I am working in vibrant cotton, to create beautiful, fun, light weight hats. These are some of the tams I have done, but I also just worked up an awesome new design that I am very excited about.
